The group started online during Covid. In April 2023, we started to meet at The Stables Theatre.

The Stables have kindly agreed to let us meet in their bar area and granted access to their library of plays.

In return, The Stables asks that members of the Play Reading Group are members of The Stables as well as U3A. Stables Annual Membership is £15 and entitles members to discounts for theatre bookings.

The group encompasses people with no and significant experience of the theatre. It is open to anyone who is a fluent reader and who can regularly attend our fortnightly meetings on Tuesdays from 10 to 12. At that time, the theatre grounds provide ample free parking.

Pre-reading is not required. Parts are assigned for about fifteen minutes at a time to ensure that all attending get the same opportunities to read. We are gender-fluid when it comes to assigning parts.

The group is limited to nine to allow each person to have ample time reading.

As of January 2025, we also have been using sets of plays from East Sussex Libraries. Each set costs £1.50. We take turns paying for these books.
